A LOOK BACK AT OUR PAST
Farmingdale United Methodist Church 1927 - 2007
Eighty years ago, Farmingdale's Methodists were anticipating the dedication of their new church building as it neared completion. The congregation had been worshipping at the VFW Hall on Richard Street. The income from the sale in 1927 of the old site north of Conklin Street went toward the construction cost.
For at least twenty-five years, the move had been planned. The original building had been renovated at least twice. The community and congregation had grown. The number of subscriptions received in 1925 was 187; the average Sunday attendance was probably about the same as today.
The architect was Julius Gregory and the general contractor was Chris Beierling. Chris Beierling was a member of the congregation. A document framed and found in the library recognizes Mr. Gregory as receiving honorable mention from The Christian Herald for excellence of design and the fulfillment of the purpose.

The sanctuary seats 225 people in a lofty space with simple lines. One large stained glass window decorated the chancel east wall. The south transept provides added seating for the sanctuary as well as a meeting area! The pastor's study was small and accessible from the chancel and the south entrance. The lower level had high ceilings, good natural light and space for a kitchen, basketball court, raised stage, restrooms and shower, and furnace room. The room beneath the south transept opened into the lower level on its north wall. Above the transept was another room with an adjoining room above the tower entrance. In 1930, the mortgage is given as $16,500 with an additional $8,000 debt. (Submitted by Barbara Gray 1/07.)
